I understand this probably wasn’t the “correct” method of escalation and he didn’t properly follow the chain of command, but this seems like just a petty move by this administration . This is a case where slap on the wrist is all that was warranted.

Also, I googled Thomas Modly to see if he had any military experience or any experience that would be relevant to have. W hile he does in fact have Navy service under his belt (the fact that this is surprising to me is insane) the Wikipedia entry for him was apparently altered at one point.

This is what pops up while still on Google, going to the actual Wikipedia page reveals that it’s been fixed already.

I agree that it is an overreaction, but not only did he ignore the chain of command but he also communicated via a non-secure source. That can’t be a good thing for someone in command of a USN vessel. (Of course, you have to ignore that politicians do stupid shit all the time with no repercussions .)

Who appointed him?  Who has been trying to downplay this crisis from the beginning?  There’s the answer.

It doesn't matter what the situation is, there is a chain of command for a reason. His whistle blowing is admirable and his removal is just. It's not as though he could possibly be surprised by the fallout.

Nah, they talked about that today during a meeting we had. That was a big no-no according to the DOD because you absolutely never talk publicly about operational effectiveness without clearance. “Classified” information.

They dont want other nations to know if our navy is not working basically. You cant do that at his level.

He probably expected it. It’s not like he didn’t know about the chain of command being in his position. Likely tried going up it, got absolutely nowhere, and decided that it’s not something he’s just going to stay quiet about while people under him keep falling ill.

Good on him, I’m sure he’ll be just fine and now the topic has gotten the attention of the nation so the men and women on that ship (and others in similar situations) hopefully have a better shot at getting the proper attention they deserve.

The Navy had already told reporters there was an outbreak on the ship. They boned their OPSEC on their own. He was canned because he called out leadership (assuming he’s the one who leaked the letter). He knew he was getting canned. What surprised me was the crews open show of support. You can see people in the video telling people to stop.

My assumption is that he sent this to a wide range of people because he wasn't getting any support through the proper channels. He probably expected this but cared more about getting his crew the help they needed than his job. That's all theory though.

I’m not clear on exactly how this got out. I read the original article. If the captain wrote this letter to his superiors, but somebody intercepted and shared it inappropriately,  I wouldn’t see why that’s a reason to remove him. If he intended it to get to the public, then it makes sense to fire him.  It would be poor judgement to release that letter to the press.

If he did leak that to the press on purpose (do we know that?  I wasn’t sure), then he was falling on his sword for little benefit.  That doesn’t seem like good judgement. But if he was writing the letter I wrote to his superiors in the chain of command, then I would think his action appropriate on behalf of his crew.

Yea, it's not clear that he's the leaker. The way Modly described the reason for his removal makes it seem like he wasn't the leaker but sent the letter to more people than just his commanding officers. I assume he did that because he wasn't getting anywhere with his commanding officers.

We don’t know who leaked the letter, but the Navy immediately ordered that 2,700 sailors be removed from the ship and quarantined after the letter was made public, which is exactly what I think this captain wanted.

My guess is the captain reported the outbreak and was told to deal with, as a carrier being sidelined shows how badly the feds are handling this. Terrible look if the feds can’t even keep their own assets from being overwhelmed when also telling the states they’re on their own. This administration has tried to sell itself as no nonsense, get shit done business types since day one with Trump doing his best Mussolini impression. Well, the jig is up and curtain is being pulled away.

Bullshit can only get you so far, and when people are getting sick and dying with ineptitude at the top, society starts to rumble.

I am not attached to this situation in any way other than seeing the headlines in the media, and seeing the press conference that chastised the captain.

This sort of letter SCREAMS that it the kind of thing that happens after the outcome is a foregone conclusion. When a desk job or a nice quiet retirement are already narrowed down to the only options moving forward.

This is when the guy has called in every favor, asked EVERYONE nicely, and again again, and then not so nicely, and then cursed them out and dressed them down. yelled at anyone and everyone, made themselves a nuisance, aggravation, thorn-in-side, and generally used up every last ounce of influence possible, and it STILL isn’t making a difference, other than ending his career...

and the bureaucrats still win, and the problems, incompetence, and mis-management of the people promoted above their competence still prevails.

This is dropping the mic on the way out the door, so that it least won’t be un-noticed.

At least they had to have a press conference. At least it got some headlines. At least he got his crew the attention they needed, even by doing the wrong thing for the right reason.

Not many have the selflessness and cajones to toss the flash-bang over their shoulder as they are already getting escorted out anyway, to make sure the noise attracts external attention.

The rules of secrecy and privacy exist on a good day to keep things running properly.

The rules exist on a bad day to protect the people toward the top who don’t keep things running properly, who claim that they are the ones violated by breaking the rules that they shelter their mistakes behind.

But the navy has experienced senior leadership that isn’t just political appointees of this administration. So, not everything stems from Trump and his cronies in this decision.

All I ‘m saying is they specifically told everyone we are not allowed to publish infection rates ourselves, so that is the official line.

The decision to take a carrier offline in the Pacific  and quarentine its crew on a US territory is most definitely coming from the Commander in Chief during a declared national emergency.

The president tried to make himself look like a hardass and say he fired Gen. “Mad Dog” Mattis after he resigned following Trump not taking his advice. His son in law, a freaking trust fund real estate kid with zero public health experience is now heading our Covid response. Trump is not listening to anyone. It’s absolutely insane.

Yeah, that’s definitely going to be the line now, as the feds unable to control this thing while also not helping states is going to reflect very  poorly on the guy on top.

Not to get political  but he was the deputy Secretary of the Navy when the prior Secretary was fired after trying to limit Trump’s intervention in overruling the Navy’s judgement on the Seal team member who killed a prisoner in captivity.

True, but who appointed him to that job as well?

45 seems to have no problem overriding the rules to help someone deemed worthy by his base, I wonder why he didn’t jump in here.

I was only aware of who he was since Spencer was fired the week before my dad and I went to the christening of the hull for the new carrier John F Kennedy CVN-79 and Modly spoke at the ceremony (my dad was a plankowner on the original JFK CV-67 and they had a crew reunion the same weekend.)

Also just saw this on Yahoo

I only knew about him after this incident, but what I have read isn’t a sympathetic picture, even if he was just following procedure.

It’s amazing what 45 will call out given what he has either pardoned or lobbied for reduced sentencing. Speaks volumes about his either dementia or narcissism.  Crozier is a million times more of a man than his supposed commander in chief.
